Well it’s finally over.  After more than 8 hours BlackBerry Internet Service is finally up again.  This was one of the worst BlackBerry outages we have seen and nearly all of the important functions of the BlackBerry were not working.  Users could not receive email, use third party apps that need Internet access or use the BlackBerry browser.  This outage also knocked out BlackBerry Messenger but it turns out that BBM may have caused the whole thing.  RIM has released the following statement which explains what happened. RIM: “A service interruption occurred Tuesday that affected BlackBerry customers in the Americas.

Sadly BlackBerry outages are becoming a common occurrence these days.  This afternoon our tip box was overloaded with users who wanted to know why their BlackBerry Messenger wasn’t working.  Then we received more tips that BlackBerry e-mail was down and this outage was also affecting web browsing so we knew something was wrong.

On this week’s show Brad and Neil are snowed in so what better time to talk about the latest happenings in the BlackBerry world?  They kick things off with yet another update for BlackBerry Messenger, what’s new in this version?  UPS has released a new BlackBerry app and it’s pretty impressive, find out what the boys think about it.  We have some more news about the BlackBerry Essex which should be dropping sometime soon.  RIM recently announced their 3rd quarter results and they had a strong growth in revenue and earnings, how did they pull it off?  Last week we had a dreaded BIS outage, what exactly happened?  All that plus another round of AT&T vs. Verizon and Brad lets us know why he isn’t very happy with Bing right now.

We have seen a couple different leaks for BlackBerry Messenger lately but some of them have caused issues.  That’s the thing with leaks, you never really know if they will work or not.  Now BlackBerry users will be happy to know there is an official release from RIM as BBM has been updated to version (5.0.0.55).  It was first leaked earlier in the day but then showed up on BlackBerry.com for download. This new version is more of a maintenance release and it doesn’t have any significant changes.  Some are saying that the file transfer feature has been improved which is a plus because it needed some work.  We recommend you back up your contacts before installing.  This is one of the best features of the new BBM as all you have to do is enter your email to restore all your contacts.  Version 5.0.0.55 should be available shortly on BlackBerry App World but in the meantime you can download it on mobile.blackberry.com
