Looks like its that time of the year again, time for Football season to start! If you are a football fan like me then you probably have a fantasy football team through one of the fantasy football providers (espn, cbs sports, yahoo sports, etc.)  Well if you have a Yahoo! Sports fantasy football team then you will be happy to know that the 2010 Yahoo! Fantasy Football Launcher is now available for BlackBerry!  If you remember last year there was a Yahoo! Fantasy Football dedicated app for BlackBerry that you could manage your team from.  Sadly this year we are only getting a Yahoo! Fantasy Football Launcher. You can still do a bunch of team management stuff such as roster moves, etc.  I just wish they still had an dedicated app, but oh well!

This was kind of unexpected but apparently Research in Motion has acquired Cellmania to help in improving BlackBerry App World. Cellmania is a company that works with carriers around the world such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Telus, etc.  This will help RIM get BlackBerry App world more push from the carriers, which it needs. Maybe Cellmania can help cut some of the prices of the Apps in app world

BlackBerry App World is officially out of Beta and now available to the public, and it features several new features over older versions. It has been available in Beta Zone for a few weeks now, but users who didn’t get the new version already should get update notifications any time now. Along with the update, RIM has allowed developers to offer apps for $0.99 and $1.99, so we should see an increase in choices in the App World soon.

New features in App World 2.0 include:

• New tabbed sections for Top 25, including lists for Free Apps, Paid Apps, Themes, Newest Apps, and Recently Updated Apps.
• QR barcodes can be associates to items in App World, so users can easily scan the barcode and App World will find the item automatically.
• Users can create and login to BlackBerry ID, which enables credit card payments and allows users to transfer or re-download free and paid applications easily

A while back, we let you know what you could expect in BlackBerry App World 2.0, though there wasn’t much solid information available as to when we could expect it. As of this morning, App World 2.0 has officially been made available in the BlackBerry Beta Zone.

Among the changes is a new Top 25 list, sorting into multiple categories including Newest, Recently Updated, and Themes, in addition to the new BlackBerry ID which makes it easy to manage purchased applications from any BlackBerry handset. It looks like carrier billing hasn’t been implemented as of yet, but it isn’t surprising considering this is the first beta release of v2.0.

Update: It seems like RIM’s servers are having a hard time keeping up with the number of people trying to sign-up, but they’re working to resolve the issue soon.

Imagine not having to carry around those bulky key fobs for your car.  Not only are they expensive to replace but they also take up unnecessary space in your pockets.  This will soon be possible thanks to the Viper SmartStart system.  BlackBerry owners will be able to lock their doors, open the trunk and even start their car all from a BlackBerry app.

Viper specializes in remote starters, keyless entry and vehicle security but it’s their SmartStart system that gets the most attention.  They already have it working with the iPhone and the free upcoming BlackBerry app will have many of the same features.  Although the app is free the system will cost you up to $499 and includes a $29.99 yearly subscription.  If you already have Viper remote starter installed in your car it will cost you $299.

We are starting to see more and more of these types of apps.  Recently GM released details of their app that will actually charge the Chevy Volt.  Mercedes already has an app available in BlackBerry App World that locks/unlocks your car but doesn’t actually start it.  At this time these type of systems will be pretty pricey however it’s only a matter of time before every major automotive company catches on.

Sprint has just launched the BlackBerry Curve 8530 for a reasonable price of $50.  This comes at a perfect time as the new Curve 8530 would make a great stocking stuffer for anyone in the family.  This is more of a basic BlackBerry device however the new trackpad, low price and host of multimedia features make it highly attractive.  Here is what you get:

With the “Send Money” application from PayPal you have the luxury of sending money to anyone no matter where you are.  All you need is the person’s phone number or e-mail address which you can quickly get from your contact list.  There is also an option to check your account balance or even your payment history so you can stay on top of all transactions.  An important part of sending money through PayPal is deciding who will pay the fee.  You can easily choose this by heading over to the Settings section.  The PayPal BlackBerry app is available now for free in BlackBerry App World.  All major BlackBerry devices are supported.

Keeping track of your important packages just got a whole lot easier.  Today UPS will release an official mobile app for BlackBerry smartphones that is perfect for those who get things done on-the-go.  With the UPS mobile app for BlackBerry you can track packages, create shipments and even calculate shipping rates, it’s like having your own portable UPS store.  Along with these functions you can also find the nearest UPS drop off location using the “find locations” feature.

In order to get the most out of the UPS mobile BlackBerry app you need to have a My UPS account.  Having this will let you log in and create shipments from your address book.  It will also allow you to keep a history of your tracked shipments and give you detailed payment info.  The UPS mobile app was made specifically for the BlackBerry and because of this it uses the built in PDF features to create shipping labels that you can send anywhere through e-mail.  Make no mistake about it there are other apps out there that deliver similar features but they are not free and most of them only have tracking options.  UPS is the first in their industry to create this type of BlackBerry app.  You can expect that many others will follow in their footsteps.
