Look no further than absorb for an exciting arcade-styled game on the iPhone
Something about the way absorb looks reminds me of Vector Runner. Maybe it’s the clean lines and the retro look, but the similarity ends there, for the game play can’t be more different. absorb challenges us to guide orbs of five different colors into their similarly-colored gates.
But there is more to the game than meets the eye. Though the controls seem simple as we just have to drag and drop the orbs into the gates, the elements of velocity and gravity come into play, and we need to be very skilled in making our moves. I discovered this when I tried the drag and drop method but the orb went awry and crashed into another gate, which is taboo in this game. Even a slight brush with a gate of another color spells doom for that unfortunate gate.
And woe if orbs of two colors crash into each other; this creates a catastrophe as all the gates are destroyed by such a collision. But when we combine orbs of the same color, our points rake up faster. We need to be careful though that we don’t make our orb too large, for if it occupies the whole gate, the giant orb will get stuck and prevent other orbs from passing through.
All hope is not lost if a gate is destroyed, for combing five orbs together on the screen automatically restores the gate. There are 30 levels filled with orb action, and thankfully a pause button to use whenever we need a break. absorb also boasts of a range of 15 color palettes to choose from. But the best touch has got to be the soundtrack which is customized according to our actions; a fun and interesting concept here.
absorb stands out for the fact that we actually need to hone our skills to guide the orbs. It is not a mindless game but can be quite demanding; no wonder a pause button is provided. A great game to play on the go, or even to absorb ourselves in it for a long time.
